The Political complexity is explained so beautifully and the role of Ottrars (Spies) is detailed in a very interesting manner. Subsequently the plot revolves around the planning of the temple, arrival of great number of slaves for the building work, flashbacks on the terrible death of the crown prince Aditya Karikalan, the reign of Uttama Cholan, the early days of Raja Raja, his love for his lady Panchavan Madevi, the deadly vengeful acts of Ravidasan and his clique, conversion of the King’s daughter from Shaivism to Buddhism, the vengeful Cheras and Pandiyas and the political tension between the King and his son. The Inner Circle of the Chola Empire were Rajendra Chola (The Crown Prince), Krishnan Raman Brahmarayar (The Commander in Chief), The Paluvettaraiyar, The Queen Regent, Panchavan Madevi (Raja Raja’s lover) and many more. It is shown that the base blue print for the temple was brought from Kanchipuram, upon which Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perunthachar (Great Architect) planned this magnum opus structure.

The Plot starts with the arrival of the dancers aka devaradiyars from various Chola provinces, whose primary task is to entertain the Sculptors, Warriors and the thousands and thousands of Slaves. The author also explains the science behind the formation of these caste systems and explains why they have to live in a particular life style to succeed in their work. Through out the six volumes we can live through the prominence of each of these classes and understand their culture, food preferences, life styles, body languages, comfort levels, strengths and weaknesses. The author claims that all these amazing hands combined together to bring the greatest temple of all times and is proven to exist till the times of the Sun and the Moon.

The major focus is on the King and his inner circle, The Courtiers, The Andhanars (The Brahmins), the Maravars (The Warriors), The Vellalars (The Farmers), The Vannigars (The Business People and the Traders), The Sculptors, The Architects, The Smiths and The Devaradiyars (The Dancers and the Entertainers). This book brilliantly brings the pros and cons of the caste system, how and why it was formed and how well it can build a society if handled properly and how badly it can thrash down a society if mishandled. So keeping the charismatic charm of the great king and his grandeur achievements as the base the author ties up the society and the people in an intricate web with a mix of both facts and fiction. This is also the time period where the land enjoyed the brilliance of the sculptors, dancers and artists. The author brilliantly shows, how the Cholas played an important role in shaping up the Tamil culture and the Tamil language, thereby establishing a defined societal structure, enforcing a genuine law and order and flourishing the beliefs on Shaivism on top of Vishnavism and Buddhism. Raja Raja Chola is claimed to be the greatest of all the Chola Kings and the history portrays him as the matchless warrior, compassionate ruler, fierce lover, passionate shaivite and a great man born with a unique horoscope to succeed in all the dimensions.īased upon historical facts and references the author describes the then prevalent culture of the Chola Period under Raja Raja (950 to 1100 AD) which is termed as the golden age of the Tamil Land. In an essence, this book is about the greatest king “Raja Raja Chola” and his greatest accomplishments and the architectural brilliance “The Brihadeeswarar temple”. One is the grand impact made by Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan on the history of the Cholas and the other is the love I have for “Raja Raja” and his magnum opus achievements. For the past three months these 6 Volumes of “ Udayar” kept me tied up and here’s my review. Finally, the big fat reading comes to a closure.
